The Blame List Will Bury You - Unless You Burn It


There was a time when I clung to my blame list like a comfort blanket.

It felt good to point fingers. It was easier—safer—to hold something or someone else responsible for the weight on my shoulders.

I blamed:

  • Truama
  • The government
  • Negative friends and family
  • My genetics
  • My childhood
  • The economy
  • The wage scale
  • Interest rates
  • Prices

And for a while, that blame worked. It kept me safe from responsibility. But it also kept me weak.

Giving up that list?

That was one of the hardest transitions of my life.


But here’s the truth no one wants to admit:

It’s not what happens that determines the trajectory of your life.

What happens…

happens to all of us.

You, me, the next guy—we all deal with setbacks, adversity, loss, and struggle.

The key isn’t what happens.

The key is what you do about it.

I had become a man I no longer respected.

But once I understood that I created that reality through the choices I made (or didn’t make), something shifted:

If I can attract that through who I became… then I can attract a better future by becoming someone stronger.

You don’t need a degree.

You don’t need permission.

You don’t need a mentor, or a following, or perfect timing.

You just need the willingness to change yourself.

Don’t wish it was easier. Wish you were better.

Don’t wish for fewer problems.

Wish for more strength, more skills, more resilience.

Stop blaming. Start owning.

You don’t need to figure out how to make a million.

Just make ten dollars.

Being broke, overweight, sick, miserable, divorced, and depressed—

That’s hard too.
